About Consul General Wu Zurong

Consul General Wu was born in 1944 in Jiangsu province. He majored in English language and literature at Nanjing University and completed further studies at the Beijing Foreign Studies University. From 1973 to 1985 he served as Secretary of China in the Beijing Diplomatic Personnel Service Bureau in Beijing. In 1985 - 1986 he taught English at Wuhan Education College as a member of the Central Government Departments’ Teaching Corps. From 1986 to 1990 Mr. Wu was assigned as Second Secretary and then First Secretary, at the Press Office of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. He then served until 1993 as First Secretary and then Counselor at the Department of North American and Oceanic Affairs of China’s Foreign Ministry in Beijing. He returned to Washington in 1993 as Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, where he served until 1996, at which time he took up his post as Consul General in Houston.

Trade With Louisiana

In 1998, Louisiana’s exports to China totaled $1.1 billion (a 20% increase over the prior year), of which $834 million was food and agricultural commodities, $210 million was chemicals and allied products, $13 million was paper products, and $4 million was fabricated metal products. Trade with China through the Port of New Orleans totaled $488 million in 1997 (the most recent year’s figures), with $287 million of U.S. exports to China moving through the Port ($176 million of soybeans, $25 million of oil-cake, and $16 million of wheat), while $201 million of U.S. imports from China transited the Port ($48 million of minerals, $35 million of iron and steel products, and $9 million of coke, coal, and lignite).
