James R. Cheek had a diverse career in the U.S. Foreign
Service from 1961 to 1997. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Argentina
from 1993 to 1996 and to the Sudan from 1990 to 1992. His other
overseas assignments included Chile, El Salvador, England, Brazil,
Uruguay, Nepal, and Nicaragua. Following his retirement from the
Foreign Service, Ambassador Cheek joined the faculty of the
University of Arkansas as a lecturer in Diplomacy and International
Business and is also associated with several large U.S. corporations
as a board member and consultant. A lifelong resident of Little
Rock, he received a B.A. degree from the Arkansas State Teachers
College and a Masters of International Service from American
University in Washington, D.C. He served as a U.S. Army officer in
Germany from 1954 to 1956.
