Dale V. Slaght was born in Oregon
and raised in Delaware and Massachusetts. He received a Ph.D. in
International Studies from American University in 1972, a Masters of
International Affairs from Columbia University in 1968, and a B.A.
cum laude from Eastern College in 1966. He studied in Mexico as an
undergraduate and was a Fellow of the Organization of American
States doing Ph.D. research in Ecuador in 1970-71.
Mr. Slaght began his U.S. government career
in 1972 as an international economist and entered the U.S. Foreign
Service in 1977. When the U.S. Department of Commerce created the
U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service in 1980, Mr. Slaght was among
those selected for its first class of officers. He has served abroad
in Uruguay, Panama, Germany, Canada and Russia. He was head of the
Office of Mexico in the Department from 1982-84. He was the
Principal Commercial Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in
Toronto from 1988-91. As Minister-Counselor for Commercial Affairs
at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow from 1992-95, Mr. Slaght oversaw the
expansion of U.S. government commercial support operations into the
Russian Far East, into northwest Russia, and into western Siberia.
His tour as head of the Department of Commerce's operation in Canada
during 1995-1999, was highlighted by his "Canada First!"
initiative which received full support of both federal and state
governments. Mr. Slaght has served in his present position in Mexico
City since August of 1999.
