About Justice Ortique
Former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Revius O. Ortique, Jr. has
had a distinguished career in service to the local, national, and
international communities. He has served the public for five
decades, and has been an attorney, civil rights activist, judge, and
public servant appointed to a variety of positions by five U.S.
presidents.
Among his many achievements, Justice Ortique is a past President
of the National Bar Association, an active member of the Louisiana
State Bar Association, and a charter member of the World Peace Thru
Law organization. He was the first African-American to serve as the
National President of the National Legal Aid and Defender
Association with more than 75,000 members throughout the U.S. and
Canada. He has attended numerous international and comparative law
conferences and delivered major presentations in
many countries, including England, Canada, France, Brazil, the
Philippines, the Ivory Coast, the Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Lucia,
Barbados, Trinidad, and other nations.
In 1992, Justice Ortique led a delegation of more than 100 judges
to visit and study the Supreme Court of Costa Rica. He participated
in two missions to Haiti, leading a 50-member delegation on the
second mission. On both occasions Justice Ortique met with President
Aristide and other government leaders and was invited to assist in
improving the Haitian justice system.
In 1995, Justice Ortique was invited by the Japanese government
to participate in a two-week program for World Opinion Makers,
during which he toured Japan to learn about its history, economy,
culture, and government.
Nominated by President Clinton, the United States Senate
confirmed Justice Ortique as U.S. Alternate Representative to the
United Nations in 1999. During his tenure at the U.N., he
participated in major debates and delivered U.S. policy
presentations on five occasions before the 54th General Assembly.
Justice Ortique is a member of the United Nations Association of
Greater New Orleans and is an Honorary Member of the Board of
Directors of the World Trade Center. He has actively participated in
the WTC’s international trade programs both as an attendee and
speaker. Through his seven years of leadership and service as
Chairman of the Aviation Board for the Louis Armstrong International
Airport, Justice Ortique continues to help promote New Orleans as an
international city and gateway.
