FTA BENEFITS FOR U.S. COMPANIES
Trade between Australia and the United States has reached over
$28 billion. With a Free Trade Agreement, this trade will
expand. U.S. manufacturers estimate that the elimination of tariffs
alone could result in $2 billion per year in increased exports of
manufactured goods. For example, the FTA will provide duty free
access to Australia for U.S. electric motors and generators, while
imports from Japan and Germany will still be subject to 15 percent
tariffs.
Most U.S. manufactured goods and all agricultural goods will
be able to enter Australia duty-free. This is the most
significant immediate reduction of industrial tariffs ever achieved
in a U.S. free trade agreement. The services market has also been
largely opened. The FTA will remove significant regulatory barriers,
increasing market access in government procurement markets,
strengthening intellectual property protection, and reducing
screening barriers to U.S. investment.
The Department of Commerce has identified the following
sectors as the best prospects for additional sales due to the FTA:
oil and gas sector equipment; professional services; broadcasting
and media and film production; construction; telecommunications;
biotechnology, mining equipment, information technology, broadband
technologies, aerospace, electric motors and generators, and
automotive parts.
