Australia is
the 17th largest economy in the world and the fourth largest
in the Asia-Pacific region. The country's GDP in 2008
was $US82 billion, with services accounting for 70 percent
of the total and mining and manufacturing 26 percent.
Australia's stock exchange is the world's seventh largest
with a market capitalization of $US1.4 trillion. Australia
is ranked third in the world in the Index of Economic
Freedom after Hong Kong and Singapore.
Australia's top five exports to the U.S. last year were
services, bovine meat, alcoholic beverages, other meat
products, and medical instruments. Australia's top five
imports from the U.S. were services, aircraft and parts,
transport vehicles, civil engineering equipment, and
measuring instruments.
Major Australian companies doing business in the U.S.
Gulf Region include BHP Billiton, Woodside Energy,
Worley Parsons, Sinclair Knight Merz, Pratt Industries,
Austal Shipyards, Ayers Composite Materials, and Colbeck &
Gunton.
