LOUISIANA TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE
THE PORT OF IBERIA Executive Director: Roy Pontiff Located near the Louisiana coast in Iberia Parish, the Port of Iberia is a 2,000 acre industrial and manufacturing site surrounding a man made port complex. The Port has access to the Gulf Coast Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico through its own Commercial Canal and across Vermilion Bay in the newly opened Acadiana Navigational Channel. It also has access to the Mississippi River through major ports in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The Port of Iberia has expanded waterfront property with completed
bulkheading and dredging. The Acadiana region of Louisiana - home of the Port of Iberia - stretches from the rich coastal marsh of the Gulf to the rolling, inland farmland and forests. The diversity of the region is characterized by oil, natural gas, sulphur, salt, and seafood. Acadiana is the home of the Cajun culture, sugarcane, crawfish, rice, and Tabasco (r). Here, too, is the Atchafalaya River basin, the largest remaining wild swamp in the United States and a paradise for sportsmen and birdwatchers alike. THE PORT OF IBERIA SEA LEVEL - Most of the property at the Port of Iberia is 5-10 feet above sea level. PAYROLL - Current total annual payroll at the Port is in excess of $75 million. TENANTS - Over 70 industries are located and operating at the Port. EMPLOYEES - More than 3,400 employees are working as welders, pipefitters, mechanics, managers, secretaries, programmers, accountants, and other positions at the Port of Iberia. TONNAGE - Import/Export tonnage at the Port of Iberia includes a wide diversity of products and commodities: gas and oil pipe and supplies, agricultural products, fabrication, limestone and aggregates, steel, bulk, concrete, barge and vessel construction, and containerized cargo. ACREAGE - Total acreage under development at the Port of Iberia is in excess of 2,000 acres. WATER FRONTAGE - There are 62,000 linear feet of developed water frontage at the Port of Iberia. Opening of the Port's six new channels has increased that number to over 80,000 linear feet. Additional waterfront acreage is under development as of 1996. PORT CHANNEL - The Port Channel measures 6 miles in length from the main entrance of the Port to the Intracoastal Canal. This channel provides for additional water frontage for future development. Its depth is 12 to 15 feet. Its width is 125 feet at the bottom and 200 feet at the surface. ROAD - Over ten miles of roadways access the Port of Iberia. The main thoroughfares are hard-surface, asphalt roads. Long-range plans are for new roads on the east and west sides of the main channel, for additional access roads, and for four-lane thoroughfares in and out of the Port. RAIL - The total rail frontage at the Port of Iberia is 13,000 linear feet. PUBLIC DOCK FACILITY - The multi-million dollar public dock facility offers both long-term and short-term docking services. Facilities include 3,000 linear feet of bulkhead load-out area, electric power, water, security lighting and fencing, restrooms, parking, and 15,000 square feet of warehouse space. |
